I don’t so much have a fear of heights as I have a fear of ledges. There’s something about being on the edge of a cliff that gives me the heebie-jeebies. It’s not the best phobia if you’re a landscape photographer. I can’t even stand watching other people take to an ledge. As you can imagine, at Horseshoe Bend, everyone wants to be at the edge of the cliff, everyone wants to look down. I got there early enough to get a spot with a railing. But then the tour buses started to show up. People started spreading out, going past the edges of the platform and climbing to the very edge of the cliff walls. I remember one guy in particular was wearing flip-flops, he turned his back to the cliff and squatted down holding his cell phone as high as he could above his head so he could get the perfect selfie. It made me sick to my stomach. All I could think of was him leaning further back than he intended and ending up as a Darwin Award finalist. I had to turn away. Fortunately he survived.
